I suffer from a couple of conditions, and struggle with a great deal of fear. Reading your book When God is Silent I’ve been waiting for a chapter on scriptures on God's protection—like Psalm 91:5. If God is not “in control” and bad things happen, how can I trust in God’s protection? —anon.

He is our Protector—yet the Lord does not always “protect.” Part of our spiritual growth is navigating ambiguity, disappointment, sadness, or confusion. He assures his followers that some will be delivered up to prison or even death (Matt 10:17). At the same time he assures us that the very hairs of our head are numbered—that God is in control (Matt 10:30)!

The ambiguity comes from living in the space between protection and danger, insecurity and security. When God is Silent focuses on the times he may feel absent or unengaged—the opposite of the feeling you seek. Perhaps these words will be helpful.
